Short Bio of Ville Pulkki

Assistant Professor Ville Pulkki leads the spatial sound research group at the Aalto University, Department of Signal Processing and Acoustics, having 11 PhD students and 3 MSc students (Jan. 2013). The work of his group concentrates on methods to capture and reproduce sound in a way that humans will perceive the spatial characteristics in a desired manner, i.e., spatial audio. About 40% of his group is working on time-frequency-domain parametric spatial audio reproduction methods, 20% on acoustical measurements of head-related acoustics and room acoustics, and about 40% of the group on psychophysical perception of spatial sound and corresponding functional signal-driven models of human auditory pathway in the brains.

Prof. Pulkki is the inventor of Vector Base Amplitude Panning (VBAP) and more recently Directional Audio Coding (DirAC). He has been the principal investigator in EU ERC Starting Grant project “TePeSS – Technologies and Psychophysics of Spatial Sound” funded by the European Community’s Seventh Framework Programme (FP7/2007-2013) / ERC Starting Grant agreement no. [240453], and led a project funded by the Academy of Finland with project number 121252. The work on Directional Audio Coding is also partly funded by Fraunhofer IIS (Erlangen, Germany).- More info on Prof. Pulkki can be found at http://www.acoustics.hut.fi/~ville/
