Three Medialogy Papers, a poster and one workshop at Foundations of Digital Games

At the Foundations of Digital Games Conference in Chania, Crete, Greece, Medialogy is represented through a number of contributions.

Paolo Burelli organizes the workshop “Intelligent Cinematography and Editing” and presents his paper “Virtual Cinematography in Games: Investigating the Impact on Player Experience”

Henrik Schønau-Fog presents two papers: “Narrative Engagement in Games – A Continuation Desire Perspective” by Henrik Schoenau-Fog, Sandy Louchart , Theodore Lim and Maria Teresa Soto-Sanfiel as well as “The Motivational Power of Game Communities – Engaged through Game Jamming” by Lars Reng, Henrik Schønau-Fog and Lise Busk Kofoed at the FDG 2013 Global Game Jam workshop.

Furthermore, Georgios Triantafyllidis’ work is represented with the poster “A gesture-controlled Serious Game for teaching emotion recognition skills to preschoolers with autism” by Eirini Christinaki, Georgios Triantafyllidis and Nikolaos Vidakis

Art Of Crime: Micro Game Development and Collaborations with Medialogy

On friday the 19th of April from 14:00-15:00, Mike Sjørslev Khamphoukeo and Theis Dinesen will give a talk about possible collaborations with the game company Art Of Crime (http://artofcrime.com/).
The company is open for collaborations during the semester projects, this is normally possible during the 9th semester but it could be of interest to all Medialogy students.
Mike and Theis will present the company, their working model and will give some examples of micro games that could be developed by you.

The Talk will be given in the main AAU-CPH building in the auditorium (room 1.008) from 14:00-15:00. – see more here: http://www.facebook.com/events/162826440546961/?context=create#

A full Medialogy session at AES 49 International Conference on Audio for Games

The Papers that were presented were both from students, PhD students and professors associated with Medialogy CPH:

“Can Interactive Procedural Audio Affect the Motorical Behaviour of Players in Computer Games with Motion Controllers?”
by Niels Bøttcher

“Preliminary Investigation of Self-reported Emotional Responses to Approaching and Receding Footstep Sounds in a Virtual Reality Context”
by Erik Sikström, Niels Christian Nilsson, Rolf Nordahl, and Stefania Serafin

“Auditory Feedback to Improve Navigation in a Maze Game”
by Kevin Dahlstrøm, Nicolai Gajhede, Søren K. Jacobsen, Nicklas S. Jakobsen, Søren Lang, Magnus L. Rasmussen, Erik Sikstrom and Stefania Serafin

Research Seminar Thursday by Dr. Purwins

Tomorrow Thursday the 7th of Feb from 12-13:00 in Frederikskaj 10A, room 2.164 Dr. Purwins will give a seminar titled: Audio-visual Time Series Analysis: Experiments, Computational Analysis, & Cognitive Models
Abstract:
In this talk, I will give a rough  overview of my past work and ongoing preliminary work, highlighting a couple of cases:
1) EEG for Musical Brain-Computer Interface, and for the assessment of 3D television technology;
2) Audio-visual dictionary learning and cognitive and generative modeling.
In 3D cinema, the brain has to compensate the dissociation between accommodation and vergence (the simultaneous movement of both eyes in opposite directions to obtain or maintain single binocular vision), and has to suppress the accommodation reflex in a sudden change of perceived depth. I will present neural signatures for stress induced by sudden depth changes when viewing films in 3D television/cinema (ongoing work). Then I will introduce a statistical cognitively inspired model that learns the rhythmical structure of percussion sequences from an audio example in an unsupervised manner, providing a representation that can be used for modeling musical expectation and the generation of stylistically similar and musically interesting variations. Basing real-time human-computer interaction on cognitively plausible principles makes such a system smarter and more reactive to user actions during interaction/improvisation/performance. Finally, I will discuss possible avenues for future research.

Volvo visits Multimodal Experience Lab

Senior Vice President, R&D, Volvo Cars Peter Mertens visited on January 28th the Multimodal Experience Lab, together with representatives from Volvo Denmark and campus head Lene Lange. The tour included a demonstration of a haptic chair for Volvo cars by Master student Stefano Trento and a demo of the Volvo Intelligent News by 7th semester students Allan Koudal, Michael Rosendahl, Jannik Jepsen and Jóhannes Ingi Árnason. The Volvo delegation was extremely impressed by the results achieved by the students in one semester.

Nordic Game Jam on Jan 18th-20th at AAU CPH

Lighting Design – a new specialisation at Medialogy CPH

Do you want to take international leadership as the first specialist in Media Technology + Lighting Design?
Do you as a lighting specialist want to integrate the potentials in light + technology in the analysis, design and implementation of (interactive) experiences related to future buildings, cities, landscapes, designs, movies, games, concerts, events, research, TV-production and new fields not defined yet?

In February 2013 the new specialisation Lighting Design is being launched in the 8th semester of the Medialogy Master’s programme in Copenhagen.

International researchers and teachers with special knowledge in light, architecture and Medialogy from the Institute of Architecture, Design and Media Technology and from The Danish Building Institute compose the professional team at the highest international level.
Selection of the specialisation should be done by contacting Judi Stærk Poulsen at the Study Administration, Judi@create.aau.dk.
For more information contact Ellen Kathrine Hansen,  ekh@create.aau.dk.
